Eurgh! Yesterday I sat surrounded by empty packets of Cheese XL Crisps, two bottles of Dent Lemonade and the remnants of what was the most epic of all epic Cumberland Sausage Sunday dinners. The stench of last nights shenanigans permeating in the air and I tried to work our which ache related to which
dancemove stunt I tried to pull in the early hours of the morning….. It was glorious!!
Bonfire night has always been a bit like New Years Eve for me……. Anti – Climatic! But this year was nothing short of spectacular. I had the absolute pleasure of attending Fire & Feasting at Lowther Castle. It was part of a series of events being organised by the Kendal Calling team “From the Fields”
My love for Kendal Calling knows no bounds, I attend every year and have done for the last 8 years and its one of the only festivals that I will buy tickets to without knowing who the headliners are. Simply because I trust the KC team implicitly to cater to my every musical whim ova the course of the weekend. Not only that, I think Kendal Calling has done wonders for putting Cumbria on the festival map. D O double G……….I say no more.
So… when I saw that From the Fields were putting on a Bonfire Night I wasted no time in getting tickets…
Lowther Castle & Gardens is an incredible place and over the years I’ve visited many times, but on Saturday I saw it in a whole new light…. Literally. Words and pictures just cannot do it justice.
And it set the tone for the whole night……
In the grounds of the ruins, there was a whole host of different stalls serving foods from all realms, The Pitt, was serving a BBQ menu, Earthworm catered for the veggies amongst us and there was a Thai stall, but my absolute favourite bite of the night was the I Love Mac & Cheese stall, the cheesiest, Macciest Mac & Cheese I ever did taste, and with crispy fried onion sprinkled on top…… NOM NOM NOM
There was a parade round the grounds with drummers, and a whole host of magical creatures and fire performers putting on shows throughout the night. Brilliant for families, couples and friends alike, the atmosphere was electric!
The bonfire was lit at 6pm and it was bloody hhhhuouge and we spent about an hour stood around it keeping warm drinking our drinks and watching the spectacle that was the fire works! There were a couple of teething problems with the fire works, but they were worth standing around for! With the Castle as the backdrop, It rivalled Edinburgh Castle on Hogmanay….. kinda ?
After the fire works we had a wander round the woodland trail which was magical, I half expected a unicorn to wander out from behind a tree and sing me a song!
There was a tent set up with the bar and live music and for those who have been to Kendal Calling before, it was like stepping straight into Chai Wallahs. COME ON FESTIVAL LAND!
Local band The Seals played, and got everyone up and going with their Blues Brothers cover!
And once again I got my absolute skank on to the Baghdaddies! A much loved favourite of mine and my troops from past KCs! (apologies lads, I got so wrapped up in the skanking i didnt take any vids!)
But my favourite band of the night were Howling Rhythm & the Howling Horns They absolutely blew the roof off! Catering for all your Motown & Soul needs
There were some serious shapes being scopped all ower that dancefloor! (if anyone knows the fella with the dreads who was dancing with his missus all night…. buy him a pint from me! )
The bar had some decent choice of ales on, plenty of gin and a truckload of prosecco which I’ve got to say, aided my ability to scop shapes… fiver a pop though, so not too cheap. I feel like my loyalty to KC and its ongoing events is because I’ve never felt ripped off. The event really was just a festival in winter and the prices reflected that. Having said that, the abundance of music, performers, art installations and effort that went into the evening was worth every penny we spent. Folk gotsta get paid!
When I got Yam I did what any normal hanging mess would do…I bought tickets to the next event!
Under the Stars Christmas event in on over a couple of weekends in December and if you love all things Kendal Calling then I suggest you put your trust In the KC team and get your tickets too! They WILL sell out! Tickets available here.
I promise you won’t be disappointed!
See you Under the Stars!
PS. Wrap up warm! Hats, scarves, gloves, boots…. the lot!
